Series of prayer sessions were held at various locations in Katsina, the home state of President Muhammadu Buhari for his health and early return to the country, at the weekend.
The prayers were held in Funtua, the state capital and Daura senatorial zones.
Yesterday’s session was hosted by the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abulmumini Kabir Usman at his palace in Kofan Soro.
National Assembly member, Senator Abu Ibrahim organised the one held in Funtua while the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Farouk Umar Farouk hosted the one held in Daura.
Islamic scholars from all local councils in the state led the prayers attended by thousands of residents.
Speaking at one of the sessions yesterday, Governor Aminu Bello Masari said the prayers are not for President Buhari alone, but also for Nigerians for peace to reign in the country.
He condemned those criticising the president for staying away for a long time, explaining that he had fulfilled the constitutional requirement before leaving by handing over power to his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo.
The Emir of Daura cautioned those wishing the president dead, assuring that he would soon return to continue with governance.
Meanwhile, Business activities were disrupted in Yola, the Adamawa State capital on Saturday as pro-Buhari campaigners and top officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held a rally in support of the president and Osinbajo’s re-election in 2019.
Addressing the crowd at the APC headquarters, the Chairman of Buhari/Osinbajo 2019 joint ticket, Alhaji Yahaya Hamajulde, said the rally was to pray for success for the president and his vice ahead the 2019 general elections.
“This rally is like what the military call operation show your weapons to your enemies. We just want those nursing presidential ambition, especially on APC ticket to quietly pocket their dreams, because it will be an exercise in futility and political wasted venture,” he stated.
Hamajulde appealed to the masses to support the economic policies of the administration.
Former governor of the state, Murtala Nyako, who was represented at the rally by his son, endorsed Buhari and Osinbajo for second term.

Shoking: New AIDS vaccine ‘cures’ five patients, report claims

• Nigeria disease control centre insists only treatment recorded
Three weeks after Prof. Maduike Ezeibe of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Abia State claimed to have discovered a cure for Human Immuno-deficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS), Spanish scientists over the weekend said five patients living with the disease are virus-free seven months after taking a new vaccine.
According to a study published in New Scientist but first reported by DailyMailUK Online, the treatment, developed by researchers in Spain, allowed the patients to stop taking regular antiretroviral (ARV) drugs – the current method of suppressing HIV.
Scientists have yet to test the results in a large-scale clinical trial, but they say the vaccine may be a “functional cure.”

It is the first step towards success in a field that has failed to find a vaccine in the last 30 years. Dr. Beatriz Mothe, from the IrsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute in Barcelona, Spain, said: “It’s the proof of concept that through therapeutic vaccination we can really re-educate our T cells to control the virus. This is the first time that we see this is possible in humans.”
Mothe and her colleagues used an HIV vaccine made by Professor Tomáš Hanke from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom (UK).
The study included 13 participants, who had taken ARVs for a little over three years on average – all within six months of being infected.
After four weeks, eight of the patients saw the virus rebound. But the other five patients have gone six to 28 weeks without having to restart the treatment.
The virus became temporarily undetectable, but it has never gone above 2,000 copies per milliliter, which is the criterion to restart treatment.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, told The Guardian yesterday that there is no cure for HIV/AIDS as claimed by Ezeibe. “No, there is no cure for HIV. It is important that we do not deceive our people. There is no cure for HIV. However, treatment is available that allows those infected to live healthy and productive lives. We encourage everyone to get tested, know their HIV status and if positive, get treatment in one of many centres in Nigeria. Treatment is free,” he said.
Ihekweazu said NCDC wants to avoid giving false hope to patients who may now abandon their Anti Retro Viral (ARVs) drugs thus leading to an increase in prevalence and mortality from the disease. He said the agency also does not want a situation where the trust of partners and donors in the country’s health system is lost.
How about the claim of HIV cure by Prof. Ezeibe? The NCDC boss said: “Science is universal and there is no place for sentiments when it comes to science. While I would love for this breakthrough to come from Nigeria, there should be no emotional considerations in assessing the validity of scientific evidence.

I’ll run in 2019, if… – Tinubu

All Progressives Congress, APC, leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has said that he could contest for a political office in the near future including the Presidency whenever the right opportunity presents itself. Tinubu spoke on the sidelines of last weekend’s swearing-in of Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, in Akure, even as he chastised public criticisms of the management of the health condition of President Muhammadu Buhari

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu
He urged Nigerians to put aside disbelief and pray for the continued good health of the president. Tinubu, who witnessed the inauguration of his onetime protégé, who he ironically fell out with last year, also dismissed insinuations of squabbling in the leadership of the APC. Asked by reporters at the inauguration ground the possibility of seeking political office, including the Presidency, he said: “You see, there is nothing wrong with such ambition. It depends on the timing and the environment and what political leadership dictates. ‘’I will not brush aside such an aspiration….Maybe as a senator, maybe as a president, you cannot rule it out. ‘’How can I rule such a thing out? The opportunity to serve my country. But you only do that when there is vacancy.” He alluded to President Buhari’s several attempts at the presidency before finally winning elections into that office in 2015. “It has been historical, even, that Buhari tried first, second, third, and fourth before he got it. Resilience, determination, and clarity of purpose,” he said. Speaking on the health condition of the President, Tinubu said Buhari had been very honest in disclosing that he needed medical attention. He said: “An honest man disclosed to you that he is going on leave, he is going to have medical check-up, he has disclosed that he needed more time. ‘’He has told us honestly that he needed medical attention. What his doctors will discuss after that is subject to experts, which should not be discussed until he is ready to disclose it. He told us that he cannot return now, what else do you want him to do?” Tinubu advised Nigerians to pray for the President, insisting that President Buhari was alive and healthy. “Only God gives life, and only God can take it. The man that I have seen is well, alive. We should promote welfare, praying for the well being of our leaders,’’ he said. He also spoke about the ruling APC, saying there was no rift whatsoever among its leaders, and accused the media of concocting stories to suggest the contrary. Tinubu fell out with Akeredolu in the run-up to Ondo governorship election, but his presence at the inauguration could mean that the differences between both men have been put aside. He played crucial roles in mobilising votes for President Buhari, first at the APC presidential primaries and later at the election proper. Tinubu, a Third Republic senator, who then won the Lagos Central senatorial election with over one million votes, had to cede the slot of Vice-President to Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who served as Attorney General of Lagos State when he (Tinubu) was governor between 1999 and 2007. His action was upon public concern of a Muslim – Muslim ticket that the pair of Buhari and Tinubu could have meant. Since he left the Alausa Round House in 2007, Tinubu has not aspired for any elective office. Rather, he has helped to mobilise for his many political disciples to win elections.

From China with fake tyres: Whistleblowers aid SON to intercept N5bn substandard tyres

By Jimoh Babatunde

LAGOS—Many were speechless and others moved to tears, weekend, when they were conducted round a warehouse in Satellite Town, Lagos, that was filled with sub-standard tyres imported into the country by some Chinese nationals.
The tyres, described by Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON, as the largest seizure of substandard tyres in one swoop in the history of Nigeria, is about two million and worth over N5 billion. Director-General and Chief Executive, of SON, Osita Aboloma, who conducted journalists round the warehouse, described the tyres as dead on arrival, adding that allowing them to enter the market amounted to surreptitiously taking away the lives of millions of Nigerians.

The two Chinese nationals, Taolung Shen and Xu Jing Yau, arrested in connection with the fake tyres, are now telling the police all they know about the issue. The two were paraded before newsmen, following their arrest, and the sealing of the warehouse where they had been cloning different sizes of tyres under such brand names as Powertrac, Aptany, Harmony, Duraturn, Bearway, City Tour, Winda, Glory, Chachland, City Grand, Grandsonte (Tyre Type) and Sunny (for tricycle), among others. Exposed Aboloma said the Chinese importers were busted through inter-agency collaboration and intelligence received from “well meaning Nigerians.” According to him, “we acted on the intelligence we received from well-meaning Nigerians. This was achieved as a result of inter-agency collaboration. The glory is not for SON alone. You can see the number of tyres brought in and you can imagine the implication for our society if these tyres are let into the market. “We have over 60 containers of tyres; actually stuffed tyres to be precise. Again, even if these are to be standard tyres, the fact that up to five of them were tucked into one, with operators using rods to separate them from one another when they reached Nigeria, the tyres will naturally become substandard.

It was observed that the Chinese adorned the tyres with new labels and shiny linings to create the impression that they were new. Aboloma added: “SON Directorate of Compliance intercepted one of their trucks on the highway, tracked it and then this. You can see the amount of danger that these people are posing to our people and our economy just because they want to make huge profit at the expense of the lives of Nigerians.”

Expiry dates He said on getting to the premises, they also uncovered other illicit activities including re-labelling, high level of stuffing of several tyres into one, tampering with expiry dates and stacking the tyres in very bad conditions. He said: “It is a clear case of investing millions in illicit business to destroy the lives of millions of Nigerians. If we should allow something like this, it will amount to killing Nigerians.” He showed tyres in stock at the warehouse postdated January as date of manufacture, adding “because we have sensitised the public that while buying tyres, they should look out for the manufacturing date, these people postdated their tyres to reflect manufacturing date to be first week of January 2017.

Aboloma thanked SON Directorate of Compliance for discovering the warehouse and other meaningful Nigerians for volunteering information to the agency, saying that those arrested in connection with the latest deal would be tried in line with the new SON Act and if found guilty, prosecuted. Aboloma advised users of automobile tyres nationwide on the need to be extra cautious when making purchases of such products.
